Quilt pattern #2 of Plains and Pine is here... The Homestead Star!
About the Design
Three sets of my great-grandparents were homesteaders on the Northern Plains of Montana. I think of them often especially during the long and harsh Montana winters and wonder how they did it. They came to a completely unfamiliar place and had to build a new life and build everything they needed to survive. I imagine them using what they had on hand to make quilts out of necessity to stay warm during those long winter nights. I can’t imagine the difficulties they faced and overcame so I am proud to be a descendent of such strong and resilient people. I named this quilt pattern in honor of them and the legacies they left.
This quilt is a simplified version of the Big Sky Star Quilt and is made up of 48 diamonds. If you have been hesitant about tacking the Big Sky Star, this is the perfect quilt to make first. And if you want to participate in the Big Sky Star Quilt Along staring on April 5th, you will have plenty of time to make the Homestead Star first. It comes together quickly and is a fun use of larger pieces of your favorite fabrics that you've been hoarding for the perfect project.
I have designed and written the pattern with 5 different color options and three quilt sizes (Baby, Throw, and Bed). The pattern includes notes and examples of each option.
The skill level for this pattern is Confident Beginner. The pattern involves cutting and sewing on a bias, sewing with a consistent ¼” seam throughout, and precision when matching diamond points.
Cover Quilt
I used one 1/2 yard bundle of Ruby Star Society's Warp and Weft Heirloom collection designed by Alexia Marcelle Abegg to make the 12 Color Version in the Bed Size and the 6 Color Version in the Throw Size. I used Kona Snow for background fabric of both. The Warp and Weft Heirloom fabrics are so beautiful to work with and remind me of the shirts my dad wears and grandpas wore.
Ashlee Doyle of Crinkly Quilts is behind the beautiful longarm quilting for both of my Warp and Weft quilts. She is amazing and I highly recommend her for your longarm quilting needs!
