The Dog Star quilt pattern is now here! Before I get into the details of the quilt pattern let's talk about the name...
About the Name
The brightest star in the night sky is called Sirius, which is located in the constellation Canis Major (latin for "the greater dog"). See where I'm going here? I could've named this quilt pattern Sirius, but I liked Dog Star more.
About the Pattern
The Dog Star is an Intermediate quilt pattern because it involves cutting and sewing on a bias and it has 4 y seams to sew the background squares to each corner. But no fear - if you have made a quilt or 2 I totally believe you could make a Dog Star. The most important skills in my opinion are cutting accurately and sewing with a consistent 1/4" seam. So if you can do those things - you can make this quilt.

Something about this quilt that I'm excited about is all the size options. There are 3 Star sizes: Small (33" x 33"), Medium (52.5" x 52.5") and Large (64.5" x 64.5"). These sizes can be made larger with additional background fabric into any size from Crib through King! The pattern walks you through each of these sizes so no matter what size you are looking for - I got you!
Cover Quilt Details
The Cover quilt is the Medium size which I'd call a Small Throw or Lap size quilt. Its the perfect throw size for a child or for someone who prefers to just have a quilt draped over their legs when sitting in a chair.
For the Cover version I used 5 Kona Solids: Yarrow (for the center diamonds), Gumdrop, Juniper, Coral, and Natural (for the background).
This pattern has 8 center diamonds outlined by 3 fabrics. It's kind of similar to sewing a log cabin block.
After these 8 diamonds are done the quilt comes together pretty quickly.
I used Fableism Canyon Springs in Golden for the backing and sent this quilt to Trace Creek Quilting for longarm quilting. I chose the pantograph Trance and really love the texture it gives to the quilt. I finished binding it with Kona Coral.
After I had all of my samples finished I took them out to Hyalite Reservoir for some quilt photos near the spot my husband and I got married. It was a chilly September morning and the sun was just coming through the trees. It make me especially grateful for where I live!
